Single glazed sashes use one pane of glass. They are traditionally slimmer, lighter and closer in appearance to original historic windows. Double glazed sashes use two panes separated by a sealed cavity, reducing heat loss and generally improving comfort and sound insulation.

That difference affects more than the glass. A double glazed sash requires sufficient depth in the sash box and glazing bars to carry an insulated unit. The timber sections, meeting rails and bars must be designed carefully so the finished window retains balanced proportions rather than looking bulky or out of character.

This is why a like-for-like quotation should be based on more than the overall window width and height. The required specification may include sash horn style, glazing bar layout, opening arrangement, frame depth, finish, ironmongery, glass type and whether the window is supply-only or needs professional installation.

When single glazing is the sensible choice

The most noticeable benefit is often comfort near the window. Double glazed units reduce the cold radiating from the glass and help keep internal temperatures more stable. Rooms can feel less draughty, although glazing alone cannot fix air leakage around worn sash boxes, poor installation or gaps in the surrounding wall.

The glass specification matters. Low-emissivity glass, the gas-filled cavity and the spacer system all influence performance. The complete window performance matters more than one headline figure for the sealed unit. Reduced outside noise

Double glazing can improve acoustic comfort, but not every double glazed unit performs the same way. Noise reduction depends on glass thickness, pane configuration, cavity size, seals and the quality of installation. Condensation control and day-to-day use

Double glazing raises the temperature of the inner pane, reducing the chance of surface condensation. It does not remove moisture from the home. Cooking, showers, drying clothes indoors and limited background ventilation can still cause condensation on glass and surrounding surfaces.

A replacement project should therefore consider ventilation alongside glazing. Trickle vents may be required in some situations, and their appearance, position and suitability should be agreed before manufacture.
